"In a hole in the ground lived a hobbit.". A very presentable copy of the rare first colour illustrated edition. Tolkien's original map endpapers original and unsplit. A couple of small light abrasions to rear of front endpaper. Internally complete and clean with all original four colour plates present. A very good copy with no chipping or splitting to original cloth. Housed in a bespoke quarter green gilt morocco clamshell case. Green boards with black illustrations & colour frontispiece by Tolkien. First edition, second impression with the first appearance of four additional full page colour illustrations by Tolkien. This second impression was printed in December the same year in…Īllen & Unwin, 1937. The book was an immediate success and sold out within months. ![]() ![]() The first printing of The Hobbit was issued on 21st September 1937 with a print run of only 1500 copies. The book sits nice and square with some mild foxing to the first few leaves and occasionally through the book generally consistent with a book of this age. Internally the book is again superb, all original with no restoration. ![]() To go into great detail: the corners have softened just a touch and the spine tips have a couple of very tiny bumps and some soiling. Presenting very well this is a nice clean copy with minimal signs of age or wear. The book is bound in the publisher's original green cloth covers with black titles and decoration in a facsimile jacket. ![]()
